How to Make a Bánh Mì
My answer to the age-old question: How to Make a Sandwich.
This project is my tongue-in-cheek answer to the sample project every Instructional Designer has been asked to make: How to Make a Sandwich. I wanted to have fun with it, so I chose to use Vyond, a popular eLearning animation software. I created myself as an animated character and chose to focus on one of the world’s most delicious sandwiches: the bánh mì. I do not claim to be an expert on Vietnamese cuisine, but I do enjoy learning about other cultures and their food traditions.
I used background scenes and built-in character animation from Vyond for the base of the project, and then created and edited custom graphics to showcase each specific ingredient while maintaining the animated cartoon feel of the project. The bánh mì is a rather complicated sandwich, especially to someone who has never eaten or made one before, so I wanted to make sure to explain each step slowly and clearly. I “exploded” the layers into easily visible sections and explained the reason each ingredient is included. I used bright colors, upbeat music, and a little humor to keep the viewer engaged.
I wrote the script and then recorded my own voiceover using a Blue iCE USB microphone, which worked well for this application. I edited the audio using the open-source software Audacity, and imported the audio files into Vyond to sync up with each scene.
I converted the animated video project into a Powerpoint Deck, as is often necessary when content is needed in a format suitable for in-person learning experiences such as a presentation or workshop. Both versions of the project can be viewed below.
Audience: Anyone interested in a delicious Vietnamese sandwich. (The video does mention local Tallahassee restaurants.)
